The Planet Eaters

The Planet-Eaters presents a reconfiguration of Balkan folklore refracted through an American choreographer’s eye. In reducing group dances to a performance for just two people, Rawls frames the intimate potential of embodiment and play while setting these against broader narratives of history and fragmentation.

As Rawls and Kuklis channel folkloric rhythms into various actions, they sculpt a ritualized yet fluid sense of place and time, mapping the shifting territory that binds self to other and tradition to the present. What starts as a game of counting finishes with an encounter of themselves as neither here nor there, both singular and plural, both ancient and new.
